You probably did your homework to choose your new dentist. By far, most of our patients find us through referrals from existing patients and for this we are very grateful. Most everyone has been to the dentist, but there are a few basic steps to keep in mind prior to your visit that will make it easier for you and the office.

  • It’s a good idea to make sure you’ve got the basics down before your appointment. Know the address and route you intend to take and prepare to arrive early. Keep in mind the traffic flow could be different depending on the time of your appointment.
  • Contact your former dentist to obtain your records or have them sent to our office. The most recent x-rays are most helpful, but if they will also release a copy of your treatment notes they are useful when we want to refer to the details of prior treatment. Records and x-rays can either be emailed, mailed, or you can bring them with you. If you choose to email them, please have them sent to manager@gradydentalcare.com.
  • Collect your insurance information and have this handy when you call to make your first appointment. We will call and verify your coverage, and get a breakdown of benefits so we can provide an accurate quote if any treatment is necessary.
  • Complete all patient forms in advance to save time at the office. Completing them in advance also ensures you provide all of the correct information and your answers are thorough. These can be found on our website under “Patient Resources – Patient Forms”

Don’t forget to brush and floss before your appointment!

What to Expect at Your First Dental Appointment

When the day of your appointment arrives, it’s common to feel a little nervous. Your new dental team is eager to meet you and ready to make your visit a success. For routine appointments, you can expect a professional teeth cleaning, x-rays, and a thorough exam.

You should have plenty of time to speak with your new dentist. You can express concerns such as health conditions and allergies to medications, the condition of old or recent dental work, and will be encouraged to ask questions that will make you more comfortable with your new office. Don’t forget to be forthcoming about any problem areas or concerns in your mouth, as well as any treatments you’re interested in pursuing.

Tips for Parents on Your Child’s First Dental Visit

When parents take their children to the dentist for the first time, it can be exciting and nerve wracking. Young children may have difficulty understanding what’s happening so we absolutely go out of our way to make sure a child’s visit to the dentist is a pleasant one. We will never force them to do anything that’s uncomfortable unless it is urgent and our goal is to have them leave with a smile on their face.

There are some steps you can take to make it easier.

  • Explain to your child what to expect in terms they will understand.
  • Help your child brush their teeth prior to the appointment to prepare them and set the stage for the appointment.
  • We encourage you to bring your child to a cleaning appointment with a sibling or parent so they can watch the procedure. This will demonstrate what they can expect at their first visit.

Even if your children are older and you’re just switching to a new practice, initial trips to the dentist may be challenging. Keep in mind that most kids respond better when they know what’s going on and what to expect.

Don’t Delay a Trip to the Dentist

Whether it’s been a long time since you’ve seen a dentist or you need to find a new one, don’t put off the initial dental visit. Part of good oral hygiene includes regular preventative care visits to the dentist.
